At His Feet...

Updated: Mar 7, 2019

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke10:41-42

Dear Mama,

The days are full of spontaneous and unexpected changes, as a mother of little ones there is no routine to my routine. There are days when I strive to have it all together, when I can look at a list of errands and chores to be done and feel that I can accomplish them all. Some days are really good and for some reason everything that I set out to do gets done...but there are days when I seem to lose the grip and nothing gets done.

In luke 10:38-42 we are told that Mary and Martha have Jesus over at their house, Martha is preoccupied with the preparations of the day, I can see her in the kitchen shuffling dishes around, making bread, wiping her hands full of dough in a towel as she reaches for a pot, and at the same time I can see her frustration. I am very familiar with Martha, because some days I am her. But gladly we are also told that Mary "has chosen what is better" and that is to sit at the feet of Jesus. She chose to sit and listen and rest. I can see the calmness on her face and hear the quietness of her heart.

I can choose what is better too! I can choose to sit at the feet of Jesus, choose to lean in and listen to the Father's voice as He soothes my tired soul, choose to ask Him to turn the volume down and mute the world around me, choose to rest in Him.

When the days are long and hard, full of unexpected visits to the doctor's office, tummy aches, delays at the drop off and pick up school lines, messy kitchens, piles of laundry to be done, and among the busyness of life we can choose "what is better" we are welcome to do so, in fact we are invited to do so. I want to encourage you on this day to "choose what is better" and sit at His feet.
